Opening Ramble:
The start of my relationship with Buns From Home wasn’t exactly smooth. I had started a new job and the office was located next to the Bank of England.1 As I walked around looking for something to start my day on the right foot, I saw this tiny bakery selling some cinnamon rolls. I was a bit keen on my first day of work so I had to wait for the bakery to open. So as they opened on 8am on the dot, I requested a cardamom bun and found it was underwhelming and most disappointing of all, it was cold. I had recently tried Fabrique’s cardamom bun and was craving a similar experience. I wanted a Greggs level of euphoria when you get a fresh steak bake from the oven on a cold day and got a tepid sausage roll-esque feeling instead. However, I was implored by a friend to give it a chance again. After seeing Seemagetsbaked big them up too, I thought why not lemme give it another shot.2
The Vibe
It feel likes the typical Scandiwegian coffee shop vibe. No colour, basic fonts and, at least the ones I’ve been to, no seats either. I’m typically not a fan of that aesthetic. However with BunsFromHome I don’t mind it. It really highlights the reason we’re there, the buns. It’s a completely unobstructed view from almost everywhere in the shop of the moneymakers.
Below are the the dessert buns, the things that most eyes are drawn to as soon as you enter the shop or even walk by. So overall, I actually enjoy the minimalist vibe from BFH. Long as the food slaps too…
The Food
The OG
First thing off the bat, the main difference between homemade, most shops and BFH is they use a croissant style dough. So you get a blend of experiences, mostly the best of both croissants and traditional cinnamon rolls. The crispy exterior delivers a really satisfying crunch of a well baked croissant. You can see the layers and the crunchiness, crispiness in the second picture below. It’s probably my favourite part of the bun.3 The buttery inside again follows a croissant style but it soon departs as the warmth of the cinnamon enters the conversation. It is definitely an inside voice conversation, the bun is subtle in it’s flavours. It’s not too sweet, the right amount of icing to add sweetness and texture without overwhelming and leading to a soggy bun. It’s one of the best commercial cinnamon rolls/buns you’re going to get.
The Rating: 8.9/10
Conclusion
Buckle up folks, a first in Stack of Subs history has occurred. I was wrong, I dismissed BFH as another London bakery delivering mid food but the bankers of London patronized them enough to make them a success.4 It is now one of my favourite bakeries and I expect them to rival Gails at some point in the future soon. Just off the back of the original Cinnamon Roll, they will be flying real high, real soon.
Even then I refused to go to Bank station and walked from Monument. That circle of walkways is like Dante’s last circle of hell. It is the worst of London. I would rather walk 10 minutes then go through that.
One day these shoutouts might actually be seen
Because I eat cinnamon rolls how you’re supposed to. All layers in one bite. I don’t know how people who peel them feel about these rolls. Honestly I don’t care either, they’re eating it wrong so whatever
