Opening Ramble:
For 2024 I’m going to be doing a new segment at the end of each month where I will pit two businesses against each other. This month, I will be pitting two award winning pizza joints against each other. In one corner, we have Crisp W6, a pizza place out of a pub that does some of the best pizza I’ve ever had! In the other, we have Bad Boy Pizza society, a brand that’s taking London by storm; establishing different types of pizza joints across central London and winning awards along the way. I’ve been wanting to try Crisp’s slices to see if they can churn out quick takeaway bites as well as they crank out those delectable pies. I’ve also been wanting to try out the BBPS pizzas full stop, having seen them all over my instagram via Seven Dials Market and just on my various jaunts around central. Let’s see then if Crisp can stand up to the scrunity or if they’ll go soggy under the pressure. Will the bad boys disband their society having been outduelled on the battleground of crust, sauce and cheese?1 Let’s find out!
The Battleground
I thought the best comparison would be the pepperoni for two reasons:
Bad Boy Pizza Society had a fresher slice of pepperoni than some sad Margherita that was just sitting out, ready to be reheated.
A pepperoni slice feels much more NYC style to me than a Margherita for some reason. Since both these establishments are slanging NYC style, it fit well.
Also the additional reason of, I just really like pepperoni pizzas!

Review:
Let’s start with the Crisp W6 slice. They’ve started doing slices on Fulham Football Club match days. A good idea, it keeps foot traffic moving while the folks go from pub to the game. Sadly, because everyone know’s how amazing Crisp is, there was a rather long queue just to place an order. We waited probably 40 minutes in total from joining the queue to actually receiving our slices. It was a Crisp day in every sense as this was during the time where the thermometers in London were struggling to reach 0C so it was a real challenge to say the least. I thought to myself, is it worth it, then I remembered back to my first visit (click link to read that one!). As soon as I got to my first bite of that pepperoni, all sins were absolved. It’s just the perfect slice of pizza; the crust and base live up to the name of the establishment. The sauce is exceptional. The tangy and sweet tomato sauce goes hand in hand with the various herbs like oregano. The pepperoni is at that perfect level of cooked where it just starts to cup and crisp slightly so you get some caramelised peppery meat. It’s just a fantastic time. It’s what I wish we could get everywhere anyone is slanging slices.
Moving onto the BBPS. I wish it was better, I really wanted it to be good because it’s a fun brand and they’re expanding, but honestly it was not good. First negative was that while it was a fresher slice than the cheese pizza, it was still a reheated slice and very much tasted as such. It was reheated in an oven at least, but ultimately you lose a lot of the things that make a slice great. The reheating in the oven would explain my two biggest issues with the slice.
Firstly it felt dry as hell, like all the moisture from the cheese had disappeared, it was too crunchy and not enough pull from the mozzarella. I think also it means the honey kind of disappears in the grease of the pepperoni and nduja. Assuming there was some nduja, because I sure as hell couldn’t taste any. With the bland flavourless schmear of a sauce, limp basil and missing meat, I can understand why this slice is Notorious…
Secondly, peep the picture below. You see that blackened cracked underside. There’s not enough Palmer’s lotion in Brixton to save this dry burnt slice. Like if you know you’re going to be reheating slices, maybe pull them out just before they’re fully baked so they don’t end up like burnt shrapnel falling apart on your plate. If this is exclusively for drunk people, fair enough but I’d rather go Voodoo Ray’s and get true trash pizza. Halfstepping ain’t welcome at this dancerie. No siree bob, take your dry slice straight to the bin please.
Conclusion
Key Match Ups
Crust/Base - Winner = Crisp W6
Sauce = Crisp W6
Toppings = Crisp W6
Winner by KO = Crisp W6
I really wanted this to be a close one folks. Kickoff the inaugural battle with a fight for the ages. A rumble in the jungle but honestly it was a beat down behind the bins. Crisp W6 are just streets ahead. Even with the 40 minute wait, it’s just worth it for Crisp. For BBPS, even a 3 minute wait isn’t worth the reheated bland pizza. I’m assuming the awards weren’t for their quick pizzas because we’ll cover their Detroit style pizza at a later date too… Until then, stay crispy my friends.
In my head, thunder and lightning strike as you read this to really amp up the drama!!!!!!!
Yes I like this series - putting two up against eachother, keeping it spiceyyyy
